Guide

Import WhatsApp group contacts into Google Contacts.

A practical route from a WhatsApp group to Google Contacts using an Excel download and a CSV import.

Steps

  1. Download the group as an Excel workbook with the extension (10 numbers free).
  2. In Excel, keep the phone number and name columns, remove rows you are not authorized to store, and rename headers to Name and Phone 1 - Value.
  3. Save as CSV UTF-8.
  4. Open Google Contacts, choose Import, and upload the CSV.
  5. Use Google Contacts' Merge & fix to clear duplicates.

Tips

Keep the country code in each number so Google Contacts stores it in international format. Add a label column such as the group name to find imported contacts later.

Why route through Excel first

The extension downloads an Excel (.xlsx) workbook, not a direct CSV file. Reviewing the workbook first lets you delete rows for people who should not be stored, fix names that only show a public display name, and confirm every phone number keeps its country code. Google Contacts reads CSV best when headers match its own template, so renaming columns in Excel before saving saves cleanup after import.

Common problems

If numbers import without a plus sign or lose leading digits, format the phone column as text in Excel before saving the CSV. If accented names look broken, make sure you chose CSV UTF-8 rather than plain CSV. If a group member is missing, their number may be hidden by WhatsApp privacy settings, which the extension cannot bypass.
